A Bridge in Glass and Other Writing by Derek Sowers

Published by Dreamspinner Press

When Drummer Foss and Aaron Hayes stumble across a glittering, pen-sized trinket in a San Francisco alley, their 10-year relationship comes to a fateful crossroads. The object unexpectedly triggers in Drummer’s fingers, sending him backward in time to the year 2000.

Trapped in the past with no answers and no way home, the 45-year-old Drummer commits to a new purpose: to discretely intervene in the 20-year-old Aaron’s life and prevent an abusive relationship that Aaron once suffered.

But circumstances push the older Drummer and younger Aaron together in exhilarating if dubious ways, creating a complicated new connection between them. Though they struggle to define this relationship, time won’t wait. The known future is approaching, and the two men soon face a paradoxical choice: do they go their separate ways and allow the original relationship to come full circle, or do they continue their new life together, allowing the old to fade into time? One choice leads to a blissful future…the other to catastrophe. But which choice comes to what end?

From the Author:

Greetings!

Thank you for your interest in my debut novel, A Bridge in Glass, a science fiction, time travel romance with two gay male leads. While this particular sci-fi trope isn’t new, readers have consistently told me that they’ve never read anything quite like this particular book. A Bridge in Glass is a wistful, fateful love story that explores themes of devotion and destiny but goes one step further by challenging the way we think of time travel stories, romances and gay relationships overall.

A Bridge in Glass is not hard science fiction but it does embrace the mechanics of time travel with serious scientific logic. And it’s not a typical romance but still remains true to the time-honored themes of unqualified love and personal sacrifice.

I’m confident you’ll enjoy reading this book as much as I loved writing it.

I’m pleased to present a trio of short stories, just released on August 12, 2025. Each story takes place in its own unique setting with its own narrative voice, but all three share themes of human connection, isolation and reflection. The book is a quick read but within its few pages is an abundance of emotion and tension.

When loud, unidentified noises begin rippling across the nighttime sky across the world, a man hears a voice speaking directly into his mind, ordering him to commit unspeakable acts. Cracks in the Sky is a tense delve into his increasing isolation and a test of just how far he’ll go to preserve what he thinks is the greater good.

As two men from different generations explore the ruins of a previously deserted city, their old world collides with the new, challenging their views of themselves and each other. Contemporaries is a post-apocalyptic tale exploring the disparate ways people of different ages view the world they share.

When a young boy visits his great grandmother in a nursing home, his innocence ends when his empathy blooms. The Voice of Memory focuses on a singular event in 1977, when an ordinary child learns the complicated depths of human yearning, regardless of age, and the need we have for connection.

Science Fiction, Speculative Fiction,
Time Travel, Gay Romance

While I can’t reveal the details just yet, I will say that this story expands on the events and elements of the first book, while staying true to its own narrative. It may seem like a straightforward sequel, but it’s everything else too! CURRENTLY A WORK IN PROGRESS

Science Fiction, Speculative Fiction, Space Opera

Many years ago, I wrote a rambunctious 600+ page space opera entitled, Rift in the Mountain. It was my first attempt at an epic work of fiction. While you may find vestiges of it out there on Goodreads or in a Google search, I’ve since withdrawn the novel from publication. It needs a good rewrite and some much-needed editing, which I may yet give it, time permitting.
