Our Long-Overdue Honeymoon Cruise
In May, my husband Miguel and I took our long-overdue honeymoon cruise to Alaska. It was well worth the wait. We boarded the Ruby Princess in San Francisco’s on May 3 and sailed for ten days, stopping in Ketchikan, Skagway, Price Rupert Canada and cruising through Glacier Bay. Our stop at Sitka was cancelled due to stormy seas, but from beginning to end our honeymoon was fantastic regardless. We had wifi on only one day and phone connections only when in port, but this limited service only added to the idyllic sense of freedom and isolation we desperately craved.
Our departure from San Francisco was quite celebratory. A friend gave us a ride to the pier and before long we were on our way. We passed under the Golden Gate Bridge to great fanfare. The ship blew its horn and tourists on the bridge waved as we set out into the Pacific. It felt like an old movie where a cruise ship is leaving port and people are throwing streamers, cranking noisemakers and bidding passengers an exciting farewell. The return through the Golden Gate would be even more magical, with dawn approaching and the city bathed in gentle blue light.
The trip itself was a joy. We took an old train up the mountainside in Skagway and delighted in the snow-topped mountains and blue-hued glaciers. It was relaxing in every possible way, but there was still plenty to do on the ship and ashore.
Something I took great pleasure in was simply watching the horizon, particularly at sunrise and sunset. There’s something almost hypnotic about looking out at the endless ocean, knowing it wraps clear around the globe before reaching land again, a few islands notwithstanding.
I went on an Alaska cruise with my family twenty years ago, but this was entirely different, even magical. Being able to call the shots each day, enjoying alone time as well as time with Miguel, having a “honeymoon package” breakfast brought to our room on one of the few rainy days… it was more than we could’ve hoped for.
